Usage & Impact of Social Media

Man is a social animal, and society teaches us beyond the limits. It is rightly said by a great philosopher Jeff Antaya.

“Social media is like a snowball rolling down the hill; It’s picking up speed. A few years from now, it is going to be the standard.”

The year 2020 has imposed every one of us to rely on social media platforms so immensely that being a social animal, we have become now social media-dependent animals.

Education and every field have become so dependent on social media platforms that they can’t imagine their productivity, efficiency, and output of employees and their industry without it.

Being an educationist and Vice Principal, the response has become a must for the ground level to the top level. The response here is directly through social media platforms like E-mailing or Whatsapp. Similarly, for teachers and students, social media has proven to be a boon in this time of the pandemic.

These days, social media is taking a turn towards more positivity keeping people busy doing tasks for their sectors. Rather than sharing meaningless things on social media, people share essential notifications, e- certificates of achievement, e-newsletters, etc. Children are busier in exploring things online like 3-D modelling, animations, and sharing these inventions and tasks with their friends and teachers rather than playing online games.

According to a study by global social media done on Aug-2020, the growth rate is as follows:

In 2020, there are 3.81 billion people actively using social media globally, and this is an increase of 9.2% year-on-year from 3.48 billion in 2019. Back in 2015, there were only 2.07 billion users.

According to digital India, There are 400 million social media users in January 2020 in India; this number is 130 million more than the number of social media users in April 2019.

If we talk about social media's future aspects, it will be worth considering that social media had an unbounded and unmeasurable scope.

According to the Global web index, by 2030, social media's influence on product research and markets among mobile consumers will increase. Facebook predicts that by 2030, 80% of smartphone users are projected to be using a mobile messaging app. 

“Over the next few years, the much bigger driver of the business and determinant of how we do is going to be video, not Messenger,” says Mark Zuckerberg.

 According to Global Web Index’s latest data on social video adoption, audience demand continues to grow as 56% of internet users watch videos on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, or Instagram each month, and 81% of 55 to 64-year-olds are watching videos online each month.

I must say that it’s the end of the wild west that never ends.

On the other side, Social media should improve your life but should not become your life.

Doomscrolling should be stopped because it can lead to anxiety and depression. As the law of attraction teacher-Esther, Hicks says that Your life is but a reflection of your thoughts' predominance. 

Today most social networks use artificial intelligence to give you control over the post and the channels you want to engage the most. The use of these intelligent tools helps you curate your feeds and deletes the posts you want to see less.

I would say that:

“Use social media, but use with restriction. Stop its usage before it becomes your addiction.”

Social media usage should be restricted to avoid it taking over personal lives. It is right for everyone to have their personal space. 

Every hard time teaches a lesson, and this year we had a tough time where we did not have any options besides increasing our screen time. Now that time is at the verge of its end, and the new policy will have a blended approach where our relationships and social media will be balanced. I hope Corona will leave us soon and only the good lessons that it has taught will be left behind.
